2015 Alberta First Nations Lands & Economic Development Training Symposium
The goal of the Alberta First Nations Land and Economic Development Symposium is to deliver a dynamic technical training forum for First Nation Economic Development Officers and Land Managers to enhance their ability to undertake successful lands and economic development ventures.
The event will focus on knowledge sharing and skills enhancement among practitioners at the community level. This forum will deliver a series of workshops, led by experts in a range of economic and land development related disciplines, and offer opportunities for dialogue and networking.
We anticipate that there will be 50 Land Managers and 50 Economic Development Officers total.

She co-owned a business for 12 years in the wholesale distribution business and retail design/build industry. Karen’s business background also includes the start-up of Kids in the Hall restaurant, which is a social enterprise that supports at-risk youth in reintegration to work and education.

Murray Heap is a Senior Environment Officer with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, Alberta Region. He moved to AANDC in November 2014 after working 6½ years for Environment Canada on storage tank regulations compliance, environmental assessment, and contaminated sites management. Prior to that he spent 24 years in resource management with Parks Canada. He has a BSc in Environmental Studies from the University of Winnipeg, a Diploma in Renewable Resource Management from Lethbridge College, and a Certificate in Environmental Assessment from Lakehead University.

Barry Laprise is a member of the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation located in the northeast region of the Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Barry speaks his native tongue which is Chipewyan or otherwise known as Dene Suline. Barry has been employed with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada for the past seventeen years and is currently working as a Lands Management Officer assigned to work with the Treaty 7 First Nations in Alberta region.

Mark is a Canada Lands Surveyor (CLS), Nova Scotia Lands Surveyor (NSLS) and a Newfoundland Land Surveyor (NLS) as well as professional engineer P.Eng.). She has a background in science and was the first Aboriginal women in Canada to complete an undergraduate degree in biology.

Lars Garrett Duck Chief is 34 years old and is the current Lands Manager for the Siksika Nation. He has been working in Lands Management for 10 years this year. 4 of theses of which he has been in his current position. He completed his Lands Management training through the National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association (NALMA) in 2013 and became a Certified Lands Manager. His prior educational background is in Environment. This is his second year as a LEDAC member, and he looks forward to providing his expertise within Lands Management for the advisory committee.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, raised on the Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement and is of First Nations descent from the Ermineskin Cree Nation. Obtained a Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1989; and also possesses the Technician and the Professional Level Certification from Cando.
Prior to working with CANDO, was the CEO of Settlement Investment Corporation. Then moved on to facilitate and manage the Métis Settlements Economic Viability Strategy, which received international recognition for sustainable development.

Cathy Goulet is a Board Member of Economic Developers Alberta, bringing 25 years’ experience in rural economic and small business support to this role. She has worked in municipal, provincial and federal governments as well as for locally based not-for-profits.

Suzanne Life is a member of the Liidlii Kue First Nation, but was raised in Cowichan Tribes Territory on Vancouver Island (BC). She holds a Master's degree in Business, Bachelor degree in Law, Indigenous Corporate Relations Diploma – all from Royal Roads University, and an Indigenous Governance Diploma from University of Victoria. She also has a vast array of certification from other institutions in British Columbia.
Suzanne currently is a member of LEDAC and has been a part of LEDAC since it's inception. She served as the chair for LEDAC this past fiscal year (2014-15) and she is also a member of TALSAA since 2013.

Aaron Samuel is a recent graduate from UBC Law. Since graduating this past May, he has been CEDI Communications Intern and is currently, Interim CEDI Project Coordinator. Prior to CEDI, Aaron has worked in a number of areas that contribute to servicing Indigenous communities. Including during law school, he summered with a large energy firm. Also during his time in law school, he specialized in Aboriginal law, while serving as director of Indigenous Student Affairs for the law students' society.
He also graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA in political science, and during this time he worked a year with INAC.

In 2013, Dr. Maryanne Pearce successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in laws, An Awkward Silence: Missing and Murdered Vulnerable Women and the Canadian Justice System. As part of her work, she created a database of women and girls, including trans-gendered women, murdered or missing in Canada since 1950. The database of the murdered and missing women has been used by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for their 2014 Overview, and more recently by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Globe & Mail and Aboriginal Peoples Television Network for their features on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. In the January 2015 issue of Canadian Living, she was named one of 40 of Canada's Change Makers.

Rick Lightning, Elder
Born in Morley, Alberta and raised by his parents Albert and Jesse Lightning in a traditional way, Rick Lightning has a strong foundation of Plains Cree cultural knowledge. From a young age, his father, Albert (Buffalo Child) was a traditional Elder and healer taught him about political issues facing Maskwacis Cree and about his people’s traditions and culture.
Rick is a third generation residential school survivor; he attended the residential school at Maskwacis on the Ermineskin Reserve. Rick’s cultural knowledge has played a huge role in his career. He has worked as a counsellor in the fields of alcohol and drug addictions and family remediation and was elected councillor of the Ermineskin Cree Nation, serving from 2004-2007.
